Most installed fences cost $20 to $60 per linear foot in 2026 by national figures, or $3,000 to $9,000 for a 150-foot yard. We cannot tell you where a Stamford job falls in that range without seeing it. Stone in the soil, the survey and permit, and getting materials into the yard all count.
These price ranges are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026. They are not our quotes. Fairfield County labor, the material you pick and what is in the ground on your lot all move the real number. Last checked October 2026.
How much does a fence cost per foot?
| Material | Installed cost per foot |
|---|---|
| Chain link | $9 to $30 |
| Wood | $20 to $50 |
| Vinyl | $30 to $60 |
| Aluminum | $25 to $75 |
| Wrought iron | $50 to $85 |
How much does a 6-foot wood privacy fence cost?
National figures put a 6-foot privacy fence at $25 to $60 per foot installed. The table gives totals by length at the general $20 to $60 range. A tall solid fence uses more lumber and heavier posts, so it prices above a low picket fence of the same length.
| Fence length | Typical installed cost |
|---|---|
| 50 feet | $1,000 to $3,000 |
| 100 feet | $2,000 to $6,000 |
| 150 feet | $3,000 to $9,000 |
| 200 feet | $4,000 to $12,000 |
What is the cheapest fence to have installed?
Chain link, which starts near $9 per foot in the national figures. If you need privacy for the least money, pressure-treated pine stockade or dog-ear panels are the usual answer. To keep a large dog in the yard on a budget, 5-foot or 6-foot chain link works, and black vinyl-coated mesh looks better for a small step up in price.
Is black aluminum cheaper than wrought iron or vinyl?
Yes for iron, about even for vinyl. Aluminum runs $25 to $75 per foot, so it is cheaper than wrought iron at $50 to $85 and sits in the same band as vinyl at $30 to $60. It never rusts, which matters in Shippan, the Cove and other streets near the Sound.
How much extra does a gate cost?
A gate is priced as its own item. What sets the price is the width, the material, the hardware and the posts that carry it. A walk gate costs the least. A double driveway gate, or any gate with an operator, costs the most. Each gate gets its own line on our estimate.
How much extra for a slope, brush or an old fence?
These are priced after we see the yard, because they vary so much. In Stamford the common extras are pulling out and hauling away the old fence, cutting back brush and vines on a wooded line, working on a grade, and breaking or coring rock when a post hole hits ledge. North Stamford lots have the most of the last two.
I got three quotes and they are far apart. Which one is realistic?
Put the three side by side and read the scope before the total. Do they agree on the footage, the height, the material grade, the post size and depth, the gates, removal of the old fence, the permit and survey, and cleanup? When one price is much lower, something on that list is usually missing from it. Quotes for the same written job should not be far apart.
Does a fence add value to my home?
A sound, good-looking fence makes a house easier to sell, mostly to buyers with children, dogs or a pool. It seldom returns everything you spent on it. Whether it affects property taxes is a question for the Stamford Assessor's office.
